Need Help With Moving Expenses? Read This Yard Sale Checklist Part 1

If there is one thing every person who moves could use, it helps with moving expenses. Moving house is a costly affair and one that has some solutions if you are open to them. One of the best options, for a multitude of reasons, is having a yard sale.

The beauty of choosing this route is that you will be able to take out more than one bird with just that one stone. You get to clear out the junk you don’t need to take with you when you move and make some quick cash off it. It’s a win-win situation.

Before you set up your yard sale to help with moving expenses you need to plan it out. The following yard sale checklist will help you plan the most effective yard sale possible.

Yard sale checklist to help with moving expenses:

One month before yard sale

Choose your date

Weekends are always a better bet as more people are free to come around and browse. You should also consider having a backup date planned just in case the weather decides not to cooperate on the big day.

Check community rules

Different neighborhoods have different rules and restrictions. You need to clear your yard sale with your Homeowners’ Association. Some don’t permit yard sales on people’s property at all.

Read local regulations

Do you need a permit where you live in order to have one of these sales? You need to find out.

Make a list of what you want to sell

It’s a good idea to go through your house and take a sort of inventory to see what you want to sell off. This gives you time to consider each decision so you don’t part with something you will regret later. Making a list on paper is a great way to remember just what you want to put up for sale and that can help you cut down on moving expenses.

Plan where you will get display tables

This can be a very important part of your garage sale. You can ask around if your friends or family have anything that will work but if they don’t you might need to rent some tables. It all depends on just what you are selling and how much.

One week before yard sale

Set your prices

Go through your inventory list and mark down the starting price you want to ask for each item. You don’t have to put price stickers on everything. For example, you could put all of the books in a box that says, Books $2 Each or whatever price you want to ask.

Get stickers

If you are going to use price stickers, pick them up at least a week before the yard sale and start putting them on the items.

If you want your yard sale to help with moving expenses, you need to advertise. You can do this locally online. This is the best way to make sure that more than just your immediate neighbours show up.

Get the items ready

This means ironing any clothing you are selling as well as washing down and dusting the rest of the items. You want your items to look enticing, like things people just can’t live without so make sure everything looks its best.

This isn’t the end of our tips on how to help with moving expenses. There is more to creating the best yard sale and you can read those tips in Part 2 coming soon.
