Yard sale checklist tips

A day before the yard sale

Have small bills on hand

Since all of the purchases people make will be with cash, you need to have plenty of small bills on hand, as well as a change to make, well, change. Most people will be paying with small money, nothing like hundreds, so you will need to have smaller denominations available otherwise you could lose plenty of sales.

Choose how to set things up

If you want your sale to help with moving expenses, this is one of the most important items on the yard sale checklist. Decide where you will be putting your display tables, clothing racks, furniture, or anything else you are selling. Be sure to put eye-catching goods up front to grab the attention of those just passing by. One of the most important things to remember is that no one likes a sloppy yard sale. Make sure everything looks neat and organized and most importantly, clean.

Grab any supplies you don’t yet have

If you need to get some extra tables from friends or pick up some boxes, now is the time to do it. You don’t want to be scrambling the morning of the yard sale.

Day of the yard sale

Set up your tables and items

As soon as you wake up in the morning go out and start setting up. The earlier your yard sale starts the more people you are going to get coming around.

Place your signs

As soon as you are set up, head out and start tacking up signs advertising where your yard sale is. This is how most people find out about these types of sales so don’t forget! You might even want to attach balloons to the signs so they are sure to grab people’s attention.

Have plenty of shopping bags on hand

Many shoppers will arrive on foot and if you don’t have bags available for them, it will severely hamper the number of items they can buy and carry. Do your best to make it easier for people to spend money buying your items by having bags. Some cardboard boxes for fragile items isn’t a bad thing to add to your yard sale checklist either.

Be flexible with prices

People come to these sales in order to get good deals. That means you are going to charge much less for your items compared to what you paid for them. Don’t get sentimental or cheap. The purpose of this event is to make some money to help with moving expenses, not to get rich.

Use this yard sale checklist to set up the best yard sale your neighborhood has ever seen and make some money doing it.
